Man Killed In El Dorado County Plane Crash Identified
EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) – The man who was killed when the plane he was in crashed near Placerville on Saturday has been identified.
According to an El Dorado County Sheriff's Office statement, Perry Nieland, 52, of San Jose was killed in the crash. His brother, 55-year-old Richard Nieland, who was the only other passenger in the plane at the time, was injured. It's unknown which brother was piloting the plane when it went down.
The crash happened just before 7 p.m. on August 16 near the Swansboro Airport, in the small community of Mosquito. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office says it was alerted to the incident via cellphone by someone on the plane.
Deputies soon showed up at the scene and found the wreckage. Richard was air-lifted to a local hospital and Perry was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one else was hurt in the crash, and no structures in the area were damaged.
Allen Kenitzer with the FAA says that the plane involved in the accident was a Starduster 11. Preliminary information gathered by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office shows that the plane was on its way to Swansboro Airport. The plane circled around the airport once, but then disappeared out of sight.
Both the FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident.
