Suspect Grazed By Bullet Detained Following Elk Grove Officer-Involved Shooting

ELK GROVE (CBS13) - The latest on an officer-involved shooting in Elk Grove:

9 p.m. 

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said Thursday night that 25-year-old suspect sustained a minor graze to his upper body in the officer-involved shooting earlier in Elk Grove. The suspect was treated at a local hospital for his injury.

As their investigation continues, authorities released more information about the incident that led to the officer-involved shooting.

The Sheriff's department said the incident started around 11 a.m. Thursday when Elk Grove Police alerted the sheriff's department they were in the 8000 block of Orchard Loop Lane and involved in a shooting.

Two Elk Grove Police officers came in contact with a male on foot in the area while in a marked police vehicle. They reportedly saw something protruding from inside the suspect's jacket sleeve into his hand. Officers said the object resembled the barrel of a handgun.

The police officers then got out of their vehicle to talk to the suspect but he walked away. Officer said the suspect brought his hands close to his waistband and quickly turned toward the officers when they made contact with him.

At that time, the officer closest to the suspect fired his weapon at the suspect. The suspect, grazed with by the officer's bullet, was then handcuffed and taken into custody.

Authorities said the suspect dropped the object out of his sleeve and they later learned he had been holding a large, dark-colored BBQ lighter, about 10 inches long. The lighter had a trigger mechanism and a long black wand which apparently looked similar to the barrel of a revolver.

Sheriff's Department Homicide Detectives, Crime Scene Investigators, and Elk Grove Police Department Internal Affairs Investigators responded to the scene to begin the officer-involved shooting investigation.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department is taking over the investigation.

The suspect's name will be released once he is booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail.

The officer involved in the incident is being placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol after an officer-involved shooting.

2:40 p.m.

Authorities say the suspect who an officer shot at in Elk Grove Thursday afternoon was not hit.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department says officers from the Elk Grove Police Department were patrolling the area when they happened upon the suspect. At some point while officers were trying to contact the man, he allegedly turned towards them in a threatening way while holding an object.

Fearing for their safety, one of the officers opened fire.

The suspect, only identified as a 25-year-old man at this point, surrendered immediately.

A BBQ lighter that officers believe the suspect had was found at the scene.

Police say the area will be shut down for the rest of the day.

One person has been detained following an officer-involved shooting in Elk Grove.

The shooting happened Thursday morning in the 8000 block of Orchard Loop Lane, according to a statement from the Elk Grove Police Department.

All officers are said to be OK.
