Man Allegedly Leads Deputies On Chase In Stolen Butte County Sheriff's Office Vehicle

OROVILLE (CBS13) - Deputies arrested a man who allegedly stole a sheriff's department vehicle and led authorities on a high-speed chase down Highway 99 in Sutter County.

On Monday at around 7:30 p.m., Omar Medina Cazares, 39, allegedly used a rock to break the driver's side window of Butte County Sheriff's Office vehicle that was parked at the sheriff's office parking lot. Cazares reportedly got in, started the vehicle using keys that were left inside, and drove off, according to a Butte County Sheriff's Office statement.

Deputies chased Cazares south on Highway 99 as he drove around a spike strip in Gridley and another spike strip laid in Live Oak. But he wasn't able to avoid a third spike strip south of Live Oak at the Lomo train track crossing.

After the vehicle stopped, Cazares was confronted by a Yuba County Sheriff's K-9, and finally subdued by a CHP officer using a stun gun.

Cazares was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. Upon release, he will be booked into the Butte County Jail on stolen vehicle charges.
