Man Accused Of Stealing Car From Driveway Shot By Elk Grove Police

ELK GROVE (CBS13) — A suspect in a car theft was shot by police on Tuesday.

Police say the suspect had taken a car that was warming up in an Elk Grove driveway at around 7 a.m. The owner of the car saw the suspect and gave chase in another car. He backed off when an Elk Grove police officer cornered the suspect on a dead-end street in south Sacramento County.

Witness RJ Swafford heard the sound that cracked through the morning fog—no screeching, no crash, just the officer's gunshots.

"I went outside and saw the officer, his gun drawn on a vehicle and the suspect inside of it," he said.

Police say the shots were fired after a suspect made a move while still behind the wheel, allegedly backing the car into the motorcycle.

Lance Bernaix, 23, was hit at least one and rushed to the hospital. He is listed in serious condition.

A 14-year veteran police officer who was knocked off his motorcycle did not require medical attention. He has been placed on administrative leave.
