Auburn Man Accused Of Ramming Deputy's Vehicle After Chase, Crash

PLACER COUNTY (CBS13) - A Placer County Sheriff's deputy arrested a reported suicidal man after the man allegedly led a deputy on a chase that ended in a crash in Colfax.

At 5:42 p.m. Monday, someone called 911 reporting that Joel Bumgarner, 38, had taken pills, was drinking alcohol and had driven away from his Auburn home.

A deputy spotted Bumgarner driving on Bowman Road and attempted to pull him over, but he allegedly refused and kept driving, according to a sheriff's department statement. Bumgarner drove on eastbound Interstate 80 and exited at Colfax where he allegedly sped down South Canyon Way. He pulled into the Sierra RV Center where he crashed into a parked fifth-wheel trailer and got stuck. Bumgarner allegedly tried to free his vehicle by ramming a patrol car and additional trailers. One of the trailers he hit damaged a metal building and a PG&E box. He reportedly left his vehicle and began to walk away against the orders of the deputy. The deputy used his Taser to subdue Bumgarner and took him into custody. Bumgarner was taken to the hospital because of the medication he had taken.

Bumgarner was booked into Placer County Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, driving under the influence, evading, vandalism and resisting arrested. He's being held on $100,000 bail.
