Man Accused Of Killing Car Salesman In Test Drive Turns Himself In

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) - A California driver who killed a car salesman by slamming a Corvette into a tree during a test drive has surrendered to authorities.

Jail records indicate 28-year-old Alex Demetro surrendered last Friday. He remains jailed Monday on charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of drugs and driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Prosecutors say the Union City man was high on drugs when the car hit a tree last month in Ontario, east of Los Angeles.

The crash killed a CarMax employee in the car, 43-year-old Warren Smale of Montclair.

Demetro fled a day after he was released from jail on bail. He'd been considered a fugitive.
