Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom Proposes Gun Control Ballot Initiative
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS13/AP) - California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom is proposing a 2016 ballot initiative that would ask voters to strengthen the state's gun laws.
"Announcing a big initiative -- Taking on the NRA," Newsom wrote on Facebook.
The initiative calls for a background check on all ammunition purchases, requiring owners to turn in large capacity assault-style magazines and making gun owners report lost or stolen guns.
"I just don't get why people need 11-plus rounds of ammunition," Newsom said at Thursday's press conference in San Francisco.
The proposal also calls for state officials to set up a clear process to make felons who are not allowed to have guns turn in their weapons.
Polls have shown California voters support further restrictions on access to firearms, unlike voters in many other states.
Newsom is a 2018 candidate for governor.
