Legislative Committee Delays Attempt To Expel Convicted California Senator

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A legislative committee has postponed for at least a week its consideration of an attempt to expel a Democratic state senator who is awaiting sentencing on perjury and voter fraud charges.

The resolution had been brought to the Senate floor last week by three Republican lawmakers but instead was diverted to the Senate Rules Committee.

Republican Sen. Steve Knight of Palmdale had said he wanted to discuss the resolution during Wednesday's committee hearing but did not. He later said he would comply with a request from majority Democrats to put it on next week's committee agenda.

Sen. Rod Wright took a leave of absence last week after his conviction for lying about his Los Angeles County legal residence.

Knight and two other Republicans say he should be expelled or suspended.
