Large Earthquake Hits Off Coast Near Eureka

EUREKA (CBS13) – A large earthquake has hit off the coast of far-Northern California.

According to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake rated at a 6.9-magnitude. It was centered about 40 miles west of Eureka, about 4 miles below the Pacific Ocean.

The quake has not triggered any tsunami concerns, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration officials note.

Dispatchers with the Eureka Police Department say that the quake lasted around 20 to 30 seconds. There have been no reports of damage, according to Eureka Police and the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office.

Several aftershocks as strong as 4.6 have been reported following Sunday's earthquake.
