LA County Deputy Shoots, Kills Home Intruder

LA PUENTE, Calif. (AP) -- Los Angeles County sheriff's officials say a deputy shot and killed an intruder at a home in La Puente.

The Los Angeles Times reports a resident of the managed to leave the house and call authorities to report the intruder early Friday.

Responding deputies entered the home and tried to get the man to surrender. But when the man grabbed for a deputy's gun, the deputy shot him in the torso, officials said. The man died at the scene.

The coroner's office identified the suspect as 25-year-old Johnny Rangel.

No one else was injured in the incident. The newspaper says a knife, which sheriff's officials believe belonged to Rangel, was found at the scene.
