Independent Film Will Dramatize Obamas' First Date

NEW YORK (AP) - An independent film that will dramatize President Barack Obama's first date with Michelle Obama is in the works.

Producer Stephanie Allain confirmed Monday that she and producer Tracey Bing are developing "Southside With You," a drama about the first summer afternoon the Obamas spent together. Tika Sumpter will play the future first lady. The search is on for an actor to play the young president-to-be.

Richard Tanne will write and direct the film.

The Obamas' first date took place in 1989 in Chicago when both were working at the law firm Sidley Austin. They visited the Art Institute of Chicago and went to see Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing."

Deadline Hollywood first reported on the plans for the film.
