New I Street Bridge Design Unveiled
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A sleek, modern look has been chosen as the design for the replacement I Street Bridge.
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg, Congresswoman Doris Matsui and other officials unveiled the new design at a press conference on Friday morning.
Nine designs had been under consideration. San Francisco-based architecture firm T.Y. Lin International was selected to design and build the new bridge.

Construction on the new bridge, which is planned to connect C Street in West Sacramento to the Railyards development in Sacramento, is expected to begin next year.
An effort to replace the aging I Street Bridge, which built in 1911, has been underway for a while. The original bridge was designed at a time before buses – and when the most-common car was the Ford Model T.
The old I Street Bridge won't be going anywhere, however.
Officials have said the bottom deck of the old bridge will still be used by trains, while the upper deck will become a pedestrian walkway.
