Crash Knocks Down Power Pole, Starts Fire Off I-80 Near Newcastle

NEWCASTLE (CBS13) — The latest on a crash that started a grass fire near Newcastle on Thursday morning:

11:01 a.m.

Caltrans says both directions of I-80 have now reopened.

PG&E was also working to restore power to around 2,065 customers. Crews believe the extent of the damage caused by the crash and fire may take all day to repair, though.

No injuries were reported after the crash, CHP says.

Drivers should expect some residual congestion as traffic starts flowing again through the area.

8:59 a.m.

A crash and vegetation fire has both directions of Interstate 80 closed near Newcastle on Thursday morning.

The Placer County Sheriff's Office says a vehicle struck a power pole along the westbound side of I-80, near Highway 193. The crash, which happened a little after 7 a.m., knocked down some power lines and sparked some flames.

About 1 to 2 acres were burned Cal Fire NEU says. The flames have since been put out.

Authorities do not have an estimated time of reopening for I-80 at this point.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if at all possible.
