Hotel Next To Golden 1 Center Named After Environmentalist Figure

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The name of the new upscale hotel next to Golden 1 Center has been revealed.

Kimpton Hotels says the hotel will be named The Sawyer.

Despite Sacramento's link to Mark Twain, the hotel's name is actually inspired by a real-life Sawyer - judge Lorenzo Sawyer, best known for his 1884 decision that would help shape conservationism in the US. "Sawyer's Decision" banned mining processes that polluted California's waterways.

With the new arena being designed with a big emphasis on sustainability, Sacramento Kings and Kimpton officials say the Sawyer name is a perfect fit.

"The Sawyer will stand as a landmark for all of our region's leadership in environmental protection, conservation and sustainability," said Kings President Chris Granger in a release.

The hotel will be 16 stories tall and have 250 rooms. It's expected to open in spring 2017.
