Police: Man Doused Denny's Diners With Liquid, Tried To Light Them On Fire

HAYWARD (AP) -- Authorities say a 43-year-old Bay Area man is facing criminal charges for dousing diners with a flammable liquid and trying to set them on fire at a restaurant.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports the man was eating breakfast at a Denny's restaurant in Hayward Wednesday when he got up and took out a container and sprayed nearby customers, including a small child.

He was not identified pending charges by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Police did not specify the liquid.

Police say the man also covered the floor in the liquid and tried to set it ablaze with a lighter. A group of patrons and employees stopped him. He was later arrested.

No injuries were reported. Police say they are asking prosecutors to charge the man with attempted arson and attempted murder.
