Rio Linda raging fire destroys part of junkyard
RIO VISTA -- A raging fire in Rio Linda destroyed part of a junkyard and sent a plume of smoke that could be seen from several miles away in Folsom.
"It was barreling like dark black smoke and heat it was tremendous," said Rio Linda neighbor Tim Nell.
According to Sacramento Metro Fire District, the fire was in the area of 6815 W 6th Street.
"Well, that is the issue because there's so much fuel out there for this fire to burn these fires become hot anytime you have any metal burning... that presents a very large problem for firefighters," says Captain Wilbourn, who tells CBS13 the department dedicated significant resources to the firefight including 20 engines, a helicopter, and a bulldozer.
Neighbors like Tim Nell watched as crews navigated through the narrow junkyard entrance, concerned visitors who followed the smoke plume to Rio Linda would get in the way.
"Cars up and down the road while they were trying to get through. Cars [were] going back and forth blocking them," said Tim Nell.
Crews were able to contain the fire without any injuries or structures destroyed.
Hazmat was on the scene as a precaution to help protect the waterways from potentially hazardous chemicals.
The fire began as a grass fire and spread to the business. It's unclear how the grass fire was started.
