Grandma Gets Probation After Meth Pipe Found In Granddaughter's Backpack

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah grandmother who pleaded guilty to child endangerment and drug charges after a teacher found a meth pipe in her 8-year-old granddaughter's backpack has been sentenced to three years of probation.

Court records show the 59-year-old woman was also ordered to write apology letters to her grandchildren, undergo drug treatment and pay a $600 fine.

Police say the she was smoking meth shortly before helping the girl with her reading homework in Washington Terrace, Utah, and dropped the pipe in the bag by accident. Her lawyer didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.

Prosecutors dropped two other charges against her as part of a plea deal.

She was charged after a teacher discovered the pipe inside a plastic baggy on Oct. 21. Authorities say they found drugs and paraphernalia near children's toys at the family home.
