Old Sacramento's Gold Rush Days May Glitter Again
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Sacramento's annual Gold Rush Days may not be history after all.
On Monday, it was announced that the Labor Day celebration in Old Sacramento was being canceled due to the drought because up to 3000 gallons of water a day is needed to dampen dirt used to recreate the wild-west scene.
Now Sacramento city leaders say they want the Gold Rush Days organizers to reconsider and come up with some variation or alternative so that the event can still go on this year.
"I think it's an important part of our culture." says mayor pro-tem Angelique Ashby.
"I know the community is not very pleased with the decision" says Councilman Steve Hansen.
Mayor Kevin Johnson says more than 100,000 people attend each year and "I've heard from a lot of people that they are very disappointed, especially our businesses and merchants in Old Sac and our community."
