Car Crashes Off I-80 In Sierra; First Responders Ping Cellphone To Find Wreck

NEVADA COUNTY (CBS13) — Authorities say they had to ping a woman's cellphone to find her after she crashed off of Interstate 80 in the Sierra on Wednesday morning.

The crash happened just before 7 a.m. off the westbound side of the free, west of Yuba Gap.

Exactly what led up to the crash is unclear, but the car ended up falling 300-400 feet down an embankment in the center divide of the freeway.

The woman inside the car managed to call 911 for help, but first responders were originally unable to find the crash from the roadway. With the help of pinging her phone, CHP says they were able to locate the wreck.

She was soon transported from the scene with minor to moderate injuries, officers say.

One lane of I-80 was closed for some time, but it was reopened by late Wednesday morning.
