Global Winter Wonderland Bringing Seasonal Offering For Its Second Year

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Global Winter Wonderland is starting its second year in Sacramento next week with a brand-new theme.

The work is in full swing to transform Cal Expo's 17 acres into a Global Winter Wonderland.

"This year we are coming back with a whole new theme, Magic of the seasons - we have all new displays this year," said spokeswoman Joanna Ricken.

About 100 people are working furiously on more than 70 light displays towering seven stories, all symbolizing the four seasons. Many of the displays are made from recycled items.

"In Summer we are going to have a giant sunken ship with mermaids and plenty of fish, coral, and a giant octopus covered in recycled glass plates," she said.

It's a lot of work to make it all come to life.

"There are several tons of steel and thousands of yards of silk on all the lanterns so to build one of the giant lanterns that's 70 feet tall can take a full week to build," she said.

There's something for everyone.

"Full carnival, rides and games, acrobats on ice, international food court, art for sale, holiday shopping, and kids activities," she said.

And they hope that the thousands of people who turned out last year will come out and enjoy it again.

The event runs from Nov. 14 to Jan. 3. Tickets are $18 for adults, $14 for kids and seniors, while kids under 3 are free.
