Galt Man Convicted Of Murdering Animal Control Officer

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A Galt man suspected in the shooting death of a Sacramento County animal control officer has been convicted of first-degree murder.

The decision against Joseph Francis Corey was reached Thursday. According to the Sacramento County District Attorney's office, the jury also found Corey guilty on two special circumstances: murder against an appointed official and lying in wait.

Corey was arrested back in 2012 for the murder of Officer Roy Marcum. Prosecutors said that Corey had gotten into his foreclosed house and barricaded himself inside.

Marcum showed up at the home on Nov. 27 to take away some dogs and cats. As Marcum went up to the home, prosecutors said that Corey fatally shot the officer through the front door with a high-powered hunting rifle.

A 17-hour standoff between Corey and a SWAT team ensued before he was eventually taken into custody.

Corey is now facing life in prison without parole. He will be sentenced on Dec. 12.
