Fugitive In Winters Slaying Returned To Calif. From Vegas

WOODLAND, Calif. (AP) — A fugitive who was arrested in Las Vegas after a police standoff has been returned to Northern California to face a murder charge in the November slaying of his ex-girlfriend.

William Carl Gardner III did not enter a plea during an appearance in Yolo County Superior Court on Friday. He is being held without bail for a Jan. 16 arraignment.

His attorney, J. Toney, did not return a telephone message.

The 30-year-old Gardner was extradited from Nevada following his Dec. 10 arrest after an hours-long standoff at a Las Vegas apartment.

Gardner had been sought on a murder warrant in the Nov. 18 shooting death of 32-year-old Leslie Pinkston in a vehicle in downtown Winters.

Police say Pinkston had a court protection order against Gardner after previous confrontations.
