Massive riot at Folsom prison results in 5 inmates hospitalized

FOLSOM – Five inmates from the California State Prison, Sacramento were injured and taken to the hospital on Wednesday morning after officials said a riot involving about 40 inmates broke out in the main yard.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said it called for a code three riot around 10 a.m., saying some of the approximately 40 inmates were armed with improvised weapons.

Prison staff used chemical agents and non-lethal weapons to restore order, the CDCR said.

Five inmates were taken to the hospital for further treatment. The CDCR said the injuries were reported to be not life-threatening.

The Folsom Fire Department said due to the number of patients and the severity of the injuries, the fire department said it upgraded the call to a multi-casualty incident.

The CDCR said 11 improvised weapons were recovered from the scene.

Officials said movement at the prison is limited for the time being and that an investigation is underway.

No staff members were injured.

Last week, the CDCR said a homicide investigation was underway after officers spooked two inmates attacking another inmate in the main exercise area.
