Fire Officials Warn Shifting Winds Could Create New Dangers In Lowell Fire

NEVADA COUNTY (CBS13) — Changing weather conditions could present a challenge for crews battling the Lowell Fire in Nevada County.

The fire has charred 1,700 acres since Saturday, and is 25 percent contained.

Fire crews took to the skies as soon as there was enough light to fly on Monday. They were worried what the afternoon weather changes could bring.

"Dropping retardant early on so when the winds start to pick up the heat comes out and that fire does pick up in activity hopefully we can hold it within our area," said Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant.

Crews on foot have concentrated on the north side of the fire on Day 3, where it jumped a dozer line and started new small fires.

An expected wind shift and warmer weather this week will make the fire harder to fight. That shift coming from the north could push flames toward more populated communities.
