Fire Forces Wheelchair-Bound Mother And Son From Home

NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) – An elderly mother and her son, both in wheelchairs, were forced out of their North Highlands home by a fire Friday morning.

This scene is on Thomas Drive, south of Elkhorn Boulevard.

Metro Fire crews say the fire, which was first reported just before 7 a.m., was in attic and spread to the home.

The mother and her son both managed to get out of the home safely.

"I was able to get in the chair. I was yelling out for the guy that was helping us out in the driveway ... And they came in and got my mom out," Darryl Shelton said.

Shelton believes their cat was lost in the fire.

They had been living in the home since 1957. Firefighters say the fire caused about $100,000 in damage.

Investigators are at the scene trying to figure out what caused the fire.
