Fire Damages 3 Modesto Homes, Several Dogs Die

MODESTO (CBS13) – Fires damaged another group of homes in the Modesto area Sunday morning.

Modesto Regional Fire Authority and Stanislaus Fire Protection District crews were called to the scene along the 800 block of Kerr Avenue just after 6 a.m., officials said. Firefighters soon found that one home was engulfed in flames, while a second home was just starting to catch fire.

More engines were called to the scene and were forced into defense mode, trying to stop the fires from spreading to more surrounding homes. Crews reported that fire conditions were extreme.

The fires were brought under control within 30 minutes, officials said.

A total of three homes were damaged in by the flames: 816 Kerr Avenue was severely damaged, 818 Kerr suffered moderate damage, and 814 escaped with only slight damage to its side. Officials estimate the cost of the damage to be about $100,000.

No people were hurt in the fires, but several dogs inside of 816 Kerr died. Authorities are investigating what caused the fire.

Sunday's fires mark a particularly destructive weekend for the Modesto area. Friday, six homes were destroyed by a fire that spread quickly from some nearby brush. Authorities are looking into the possibility that it was human-caused.
