Few Details Emerge In Deadly Modesto Police Officer-Involved Shooting

MODESTO (CBS13) — Modesto Police have few details into what led to a deadly officer-involved shooting on Thursday when a suspect trying to flee on a bike was shot and killed.

Witnesses say they heard several gunshots followed by police sirens coming to this parking garage.

Modesto Police say two officers tried to stop a man on a bike on Thursday afternoon. He fled into the Merrill Lynch garage on 10th Street, where officers followed in a marked patrol car.

Hoyt McCollum was helping a customer when the gunfire erupted across the street.

Police would not reveal why they pursued the suspect, but say he was armed with a handgun. Police say once inside the garage, the officers gave commands for him to drop the gun, which he did not do.

The man was shot at least once and died at a hospital.
