FEMA Lifts Flood Insurance Requirement For Homes Along Morrison Creek In Sacramento

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Residents in more than 1,000 homes that border Morrison Creek in South Sacramento have had to pay flood insurance for the last 20 years or so, but now they are getting a financial reprieve.

With upgrades to the creek walls, FEMA is finally dropping its flood requirement. The walls now meet the 100-year flood requirements.

Homeowners will save upwards of $500 a year.

"I'm very pleased for residents who do live near Morrison. It's recommended that they have flood insurance, but it's not mandated," said Sacramento city Supervisor Jimmy Yee.

While there is still much to be done to improve the city's creek and levee system, these residents can breathe easier knowing they're no longer at risk.
