Father, 5-Year-Old Daughter Drown In California River

MENDOTA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a man and his 5-year-old daughter have drowned in a central California river.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office says a dive team was dispatched Saturday after the 30-year-old father and the girl disappeared in the San Joaquin River near Mendota.

Lt. Frances Devins says the man may have been trying to save his daughter after she fell into a deep part the river.

Devins tells the Fresno Bee that they were not wearing life jackets and it's possible neither knew how to swim.

Authorities did not release their names.
