Fatal crash caused eastbound Highway 50 in Sacramento to shut down
A female pedestrian is dead from a traffic accident on eastbound Highway 50, said authorities.
The accident occurred on Tuesday morning just after 4:30 a.m., on Highway 50 near Howe Avenue.
According to California Highway Patrol, the victim, identified as 69-year-old Mary May, was walking in the #1 lane of the highway when she was struck by a car. The driver called 911, informing them of the accident.
Preliminary investigation showed that the driver was traveling at 65 mph when he saw the pedestrian. He tried to avoid the pedestrian, but the front end of the car hit the victim.
After calling 911, the driver waited for CHP at Watt Avenue. During the time it took CHP to arrive, it is unknown if there were any other vehicles that struck the pedestrian.
There is no suspicion of drugs and/or alcohol at the time of the accident.
The accident caused the closure of all lanes eastbound Highway 50 for about 2 hours.
