Family Of Retired Stockton Police Officer Killed In Hit-And-Run Speak Out

STOCKTON (CBS13) – He committed his life to solving hit-and-run accidents. Then on Tuesday, retired Stockton Police Officer Jimmy Pendergrass became a victim of a hit-and-run.

Saturday, his family spoke about the man who died while on his way to work, and days after an arrest in his case.

"He was the heart of our family and we are broken," Kristina Pendergrass said.

Kristina, Pendergrass's daughter-in-law, spoke in tears, standing alongside the officer's grandchildren. They were surrounded by family photos and the badge she says Pendergrass wore with dignity for more than four decades.

"We have no doubt that when he stepped into that intersection Tuesday, he had a smile on his face and a hymn in his heart," Kristina said.

Pendergrass spent thirty years investigating hit-and-run crashes for the Stockton Police Department.

Tuesday morning, he was killed by a hit-and-run driver on his way to work.

Two days later, on Christmas Day, police arrested this man in connection with his death.

Pendergrass's daughter-in-law thanked the department for working so hard to bring the family a sense of closure.

"We knew this person would not get away," Kristina said.

She also took a moment to assure the community, saying this was not a case of favoritism.

"I know that there are those in community that feel we receive special treatment," Kristina said. "I promise you that's not true. Sadly, some cases just aren't easy to solve."

Police say they were tipped off to a van that matched the description of the van caught on surveillance cameras.

They found the suspect sleeping inside, but police emphasize the investigation is not complete.

"We're relieved, but it's still a long road," said Officer Joe Silva with the Stockton Police Department. "We still have the court process and that's why we need the community's help."

Flags flew at half-staff outside the Stockton Police Department Saturday.

Police say they're still looking for witnesses, who they say can remain anonymous.
