Family Friend Charged In Cold Case Murder Of 3-Year-Old Fairfield Boy

FAIRFIELD (CBS13) — Nearly 32 years went by and all the Handa family had was a ransom note and a window left open. Toshiro Handa was 3 years old when he vanished without a trace.

"We want him home and are hoping for the best and that's all I can say," said his mother Linda back in 1984.

The family did countless interviews and police worked tirelessly, but the case would grow cold for more than three decades.

But in 2011 cold case detectives began working with the FBI. Within a few years they would find evidence pointing to Michael Blas Ferjarang. They said he was 23 years old at the time and a family friend. He's now charged with murder and kidnapping.

News the family was devastated to learn.

"It brought back memories of when my mom called me and told me to Toshiro had been kidnapped and I got the same feelings again," said the boy's uncle Earl Handa.

He said they held onto hope all of these years they would see Toshiro again and the murder charge brings back horrible feelings.

"With time they go away and you don't think about them and you don't feel them, but whenever stuff like this happens it just comes right back," Handa said.

While he believes he will never have closure, he hopes justice will prevail in the end.

"We never rest on our laurels and think that we've done everything we can do, there's always more to be done on these cases," said Sgt. Jeff Osgood with the Fairfield Police.

Fejarang is currently serving a 26 year prison sentence related to separate child molestation cases and Will be tried for first-degree murder and kidnapping for ransom.
