Expecting An Xbox One Or PS4 Under The Tree? Make Sure Santa Runs The Updates On Christmas Eve

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Santa's in the middle of his run, but you might want to get ahold of him if you're expecting a new video game console under the tree this year.

The PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U all require large updates when they're first put in to use, and with families across the country plugging in their devices for the first time on Christmas morning, the servers are expected to be slammed. Without those updates, a lot of the systems' features won't work right away.

Also of concern, distributed denial of service attacks have been launched against Sony and Microsoft servers in recent years. As if the number of people trying to update their new consoles is bad enough, people with too much time on their hands and an ax to grind use the DDoS attacks to slow and cripple systems by flooding servers with more traffic than they can handle.

So the moral of the story is, get in touch with Santa tonight and make sure the elves ran the necessary software updates. Otherwise, you could be in for a long wait on Christmas morning.
