Evacuations Lifting As Fire Crews Will Battle Butts Fire Through Holiday Weekend
NAPA VALLEY (CBS13) — Fire crews will be working through the holiday to tame the Butts Fire, but they've made enough progress that evacuees are able to start coming home.
The blaze has burned 4,300 acres since the fire broke out on Tuesday as 1,700 firefighters have brought it to 45 percent containment.
Roberto Verbera grabbed all of the baby pictures and wedding albums he could when the Butts Fire forced his family out.
"This is a picture of my oldest daughter—she's now 19," he said. "This would've been a tough one to replace."
His family couldn't wait to get them back on the walls that are thankfully still standing.
"That's hard," Chelene Verbera said. "We just had the clothes on our back."
The evacuation order for Berryessa Estates was lifted earlier in the day, and late Thursday, the order was lifted for the Butts Canyon Road area.
Fire crews are gradually gaining the upper hand on the wildlife that's charred seven square miles. Skies that were filled with smoke a day or two ago are now clear.
But firefighters say looks can be deceiving.
For some there will be heartache. Two homes burned to the ground in the area, with one leaving only a chimney standing.
