Esthetician Creates Techniques To Help The Blind With Makeup

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Gina Centeno counts to five as she works on putting her makeup on.

"Find the very edge.  Close to the lashes," esthetician Judith Woodworth tells her.

For the past 25 years, Centeno hasn't worn makeup because she lost her sight.

"[I was] afraid I would look like a clown, not have it blended right, my lipstick wouldn't be put on properly," Centeno says.

Woodworth found out this was a problem for blind women years ago, so she started experimenting.

"Pretend you're blind.  Now find your eye, find the edge of your eye," Woodworth says.

An esthetician, Woodworth realized cream foundation would be a challenge

"Sight impaired, there's no blending.  You can't see if you've blended or not blended," Woodworth says.

She also found having women count to five using powder helped their blending.

"When I'm counting to five, I know exactly where I'm at and make sure it's blended," Centeno says.

Centeno finishes with the hardest part – her mascara.  And even though she can't see how it turned out, she knows it looks good.

"It's an ease.  It gives me so much confidence that I can do it," Centeno says.

Woodworth says she is careful about the ingredients in the makeup in case anything were to get into anyone's eyes.
