End Of Current Downtown Plaza In Sight As Demolition Work Scheduled To Start
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — The end of the current Downtown Plaza mall is near as Sacramento Kings ownership confirmed they will begin demolition of vacant storefronts and empty corridors on Friday.
Don't look for a wrecking ball when the calendar turns to August. The fires step will be tearing out wires and removing asbestos. Those are jobs that members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers local 340 will be hired to complete.
"We're looking forward to a two-year run, it's been quite a wait," said Tom Okumura. "We're very excited about that."
Okumura, the business manager of the electrician's union, says at the peak of arena construction, 100 of his members will be on the project.
"To have this news as far as the start of something bigger to come, is great," he said. "I think it's basically the starting gun for the type of work were going to have in Sacramento."
The owners of River City Brewing Company near the arena site hope the demolition will actually drive business up, with people coming to see the work going on.
