Driver Killed, Child OK After Crash Along Highway 99

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A car crash claimed the life of a driver early Sunday afternoon, but a 3-year-old in the back seat miraculously escaped injury.

California Highway Patrol says that the crash happened just before 12:30 p.m. along northbound Highway 99 near the Florin Road exit. Investigators say that a car in the number one lane made an abrupt turn to the right and went off the roadway.

The car then crashed into a tree with enough force to split the vehicle in half.

CHP notes that the driver died in the crash. A 3-year-old was properly restrained in a booster seat in the back seat of the car, CHP says. The toddler did not look to be hurt.

The driver has not been identified.

Investigators are looking into why the driver went off the roadway.
