14 Dogs, 4 Cats, 5 Birds Rescued From House Fire In North Highlands

NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) - Firefighters rescued 14 dogs and two cats from a burning North Highlands home.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. Thursday morning along I and 34th Streets. Sacramento Metro Firefighters say it started in the garage of the home after a woman, who lives alone in the home, told firefighters she was cooking an early morning snack when she left the garage and came back later to find flames in the garage. The fire quickly spread to the attic, according to a statement from a Sacramento Metro Fire Department spokesperson.

She and her 14 dogs, four cats and five birds were able to get out safely. Two of the dogs required oxygen.

One bird died in the fire.

The woman says she has lived in the home for 20 years.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
