RIO VISTA (CBS13) - Crews were able to rescue calf stuck in a ditch all thanks to a mother cow who wouldn't leave her baby behind.

Sacramento County Animal Care says an officer was leaving a call from a deep south part of the county, near Rio Vista, when she came across a cow.

The officer said the mother cow was distraught. As the officer soon discovered, a calf was stuck in a four-foot deep ditch.

Rio Vista Fire, a concerned citizen and the officer all jumped into help get the calf out of the ditch. Complicating efforts was the fact that the calf was stuck in a foot of muck.
