Deadly Crash In Rural Sutter County Also Prompts Hazmat Response

SUTTER COUNTY (CBS13) — A deadly crash in rural Sutter County on Thursday morning prompted a Hazmat response over a possible leak, authorities say.

The crash happened along Reclamation Road, southwest of Yuba City and the Sutter National Wildlife Refuge.

Sutter County Fire officials say, just before 6 a.m., a big rig tried to pass a slower moving vehicle and crossed into the oncoming lane. The big rig then crashed head-on into a pickup truck going the opposite way.

The driver of the pickup was killed in the crash, Sutter County Fire says.

A hazardous materials team responded to the scene to investigate a possible leak from the big rig, which was hauling around 20 tons of anhydrous ammonia.

Officials say they didn't find any leaks or spills, though.

Reclamation Road remains closed for a five-mile stretch between Tisdale and Pelger roads.

No estimated time of reopening has been given.
