Whale Carcass Found Lodged In Alameda Dock

ALAMEDA (CBS13) — Federal officials found a dead whale floating in the Oakland Estaury off an Alameda dock on Wednesday.

The whale was found in the waters off Alameda across from Oakland's Jack London Square.

It appears to have been dragged into the San Francisco Bay by a container ship, said U.S. Coast Guard Lt. J.G. Aulner.

According to SFGate.com, whether the ship hit and killed the animal or found it dead is not known.

The whale is believed to have sunken when it neared Alameda and resurfaced as it decomposed.

Warmer water temperatures have lead to an increase in whale sightings along the Northern California coast recently, and the west coast of North America has seen an increase in the number of whale deaths this year.
