Davis Development Expected To Have Farm-To-Fork Centerpiece

DAVIS (CBS13) — Davis, historically conservative with growth, is now allowing the construction of hundreds of new homes with a unique community at its center.

The city isn't known for its construction expansion, but they're calling this farm-to-fork approach a worthy exception.

Residents and business owners are welcoming the transformation of an empty lot that was once home to the old tomato cannery. Instead, the 100 acres will feature a combination of hundreds of condos, detached family homes and something unique—a working farm maintained by a local nonprofit organization.

Historically, many Davis residents have resisted expansion, opposed to big-box stores. They want to maintain the small, agricultural town feel.

"I thought it was going to get shutdown whenever it came up," said Cenerio's Pizza owner Jim Collins.

City leaders say the massive housing and farm-to-fork project doesn't need voter approval, as Measure R says vacant industrialized areas can be repurposed for new construction.

The grand opening of the project is scheduled for July 23.
