Davis City Council Weighing Soda Tax Along With Several Other Levies

DAVIS (CBS13) — Davis city leaders are weighing several new taxes, including one on sugary drinks at the next City Council meeting.

Utilities, parcel and hotel taxes are also being considered to improve parks, pools, roads and bike paths.

"All over America I think we're not paying attention to that infrastructure," said resident Manuel Martinez. "The concrete is decaying and the integrity has been compromised."

Jose Granda with the taxpayers association in Davis says the city needs to tighten its belt if it needs more money.

"Stop treating the Davis tax payers as an ATM machine," he said. "They come to us, and say save us, we work for our families, for our kids, not for the city and I think it's time they think about what they are doing."

A vote on a new tax could be put to vote as early as June.

The City Council and mayor would not comment on the tax proposals.
