Dads In Manteca Helping Kids Cross Safely At Deadly Intersection

MANTECA (CBS13) - Parents are taking charge to keep kids safe at what has now become a deadly intersection.

On Friday around 9 a.m., six-year-old Jordan Morrison was crossing the street at East Edison Street and Lincoln Avenue in Manteca – near Shasta Elementary School -- when she was hit and killed by the car.

A group of parents were at the location Monday acting as crossing guards.

"I don't know what to say... unfortunately it takes a situation like this with anybody for something like this to happen…the community's been real supportive.. Really supportive," said John Morrison, the Jordan's father.

"We need people out here at these intersections helping and taking care of our babies," said Bennie Suggs, a parent. "Probably everybody like myself thought, well the school's handling it. But the school's only got certain reach. We found that out the hard way."

Within hours of the incident, Suggs recruited about a dozen dads as crossing guards that call themselves "Jordan's Crossing".

Jordan was crossing the road with her older sister when she was hit. Her brother was also nearby.

Witnesses told police the driver appeared to be distracted when he hit Joran happened. Police say he reportedly stopped and then drove into Jordan. He tells police that he never saw the girl.

Manteca police say the driver is cooperating with police and was not under the influence at the time of the incident.
