CSU Receives Record Number Of Applications For 2016 Term

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — California State University has received a record number of applications for the upcoming 2016 fall term.

University officials report more than 830,000 prospective students submitted applications, a nearly 5 percent increase over the previous year. The number of black and Latino students applying to CSU colleges increased by about 25 percent each.

The nation's largest public university system enrolls about 460,000 students across 23 campuses.

In a statement, university officials say the increase in applications reflects a growth in the demand for higher education in California but that capacity issues persist due to state funding limitations.

According to the university, the governor's proposed budget will fund a one percent net student enrollment increase.
