Crash on Highway 99 in Modesto leaves man dead
MODESTO – A man who was found unresponsive in an overturned vehicle following a crash in Modesto early Sunday morning has died, the California Highway Patrol said.
Around 12:45 a.m., officers responded to southbound Highway 99 south Pelandale Avenue for reports that a vehicle was on its roof.
Officers found a white Toyota Sedan on its roof on the right shoulder with the driver unresponsive in the vehicle.
The Modesto Fire Department was able to remove the man from the vehicle before he was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.
The CHP believes the 39-year-old man was driving south on Highway 99 at a high rate of speed and crashed into the rear end of a vehicle between two lanes.
Officers said the sedan continued south and traveled off the west side of the road, where it overturned.
It's not known if DUI was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
The driver was wearing his seatbelt, officers said.
