Cosumnes Firefighter Hit By Van Along I-5

ELK GROVE (CBS13) – A Cosumnes firefighter is recovering after being hit by a van on Interstate 5.

The firefighter is in stable condition at Sacramento County hospital with his family by his side.

The incident happened overnight while fire crews with the Cosumnes Fire Department and California Highway Patrol were investigating a single vehicle crash on I-5 north of Lambert Road.

That's when a van slammed into the back of a Honda Civic, sending the Honda out of control and onto wet grass where it struck firefighter-paramedic Eric Oviedo, throwing him several feet.

Oviedo is suffering several rib fractures, head injuries and several bruises.

"The car came through the collision scene at a very high rate of speed," said Ofc. Michael Bradley with CHP.

Oviedo is expected to survive.

Emergency crews say this incident is a good reminder for the public to slow down and move over when approaching a crash or construction zone.
