The incident happened just after 1 a.m. Saturday while fire crews with the Cosumnes Fire Department and California Highway Patrol were investigating a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 north of Lambert Road. That's when a van slammed into the back of a Honda Civic, sending the Honda out of control and onto wet grass where it struck firefighter-paramedic Eric Oviedo, throwing him several feet.
Oviedo is suffering several rib fractures, head injuries and several bruises.
Oviedo is expected to survive.
