'Coloring Book' Could Be Centerpiece Of Art At Downtown Sacramento Kings Arena

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Sacramento Kings purple passion may soon get a splash of turquoise, yellow or red in the form of a statue in front of the team's Downtown Sacramento arena.

They are brilliant and bold colors drawn with no borders; a massive eye-catching sculpture actually made of steel.

The piece called Coloring Book could soon stand outside the Kings' new arena as the centerpiece of the public art that's planned.

The man who created it is one of the most famous contemporary artists alive, Jeff Koons. He's known for his iconic balloon dog sculptures.

The price tag would be $8 million, which is far above Sacramento International Airport's price tag for its Red Rabbit piece, which cost less than $1 million.

Sacramento is putting together a big budget for public art at the arena.

Sacramento curator D. Neath says Koons is a catch.

"That turns it into people may go to the arena just to see one of Koons' major works," Neath said.

Koons is a highly compensated artist. One of his balloon dog sculptures fetched $58 million.

"Jeff Koons is part of art history, and to have a piece or art history in Sacramento puts us on the big picture map," Neath said.
