The girls were last seen heading to a mall in nearby Linda on November 11, 1973. The girls had been seen around  town that day, but were reported missing the following morning when they didn't return home. Hours later the girls' bodies were found along a dirt road near Camp Far West lake outside of Wheatland.

After decades of no leads, items from the original investigation were sent to the California Department of Justice, where DNA evidence matched Patterson and Harbour.
